What is miraDry®?

miraDry® is the first and only FDA-cleared, non-surgical treatment for hyperhidrosis. Despite all these benefits, some patients worry that eliminating sweat glands in the body will have negative effects. The miraDry® treatment only treats sweat glands under the arms, which make up about 2% of the sweat glands in your body. Treating these sweat glands will not affect the body’s ability to produce sweat and cool itself, and you will continue to sweat normally in other areas of the body.

How Does miraDry® Work for Excessive Sweating?

miraDry® uses focused energy that is the ideal wavelength for eliminating the sweat and odor glands in the underarm. It non-invasively targets the area where the glands reside and safely destroys them while cooling the skin.

Most patients describe the procedure as painless with little downtime. Local anesthesia is administered to the underarms prior to the treatment to assist in increasing comfort. Some patients describe the initial anesthetic injections as the most painful part of the procedure. There are no incisions or cuts. Treatment is customized to each underarm with multiple placements of the miraDry® handpiece. An office visit appointment will generally last about one hour.

How Does miraDry® Work?

The miraDry® treatment uses safe thermal energy to heat the sweat glands from the skin’s surface. With this technique, we are able to target the sweat glands without surgery and without damaging the surrounding tissue. During this process, an anesthetic is used to ensure that the patient remains completely comfortable during treatment. The heat delivered to the sweat glands damages them so that they are no longer able to produce sweat. The miraDry® treatment lasts about one hour.

What Results Can I Expect from miraDry®?

The miraDry® treatment produces immediate results, as the sweat glands are no longer able to produce sweat once they are treated. Additionally, once the sweat glands are eliminated, they are permanently destroyed. This means that patients will notice instant improvements that last a lifetime with the miraDry® treatment. For most patients, one treatment is enough to achieve the desired results. However, some patients may need multiple treatment sessions. What is Recovery Like Following miraDry®?

After miraDry®, patients may experience mild swelling, bruising or sensitivity under the arms. However, these effects typically fade within several days. Despite these effects, patients are able to return to work and other normal activities immediately after their treatment. Patients often return to exercise and other physical activities within a few days.
